Rebel vs D70

So, i've been debating this for a year or so now - Canon EOS Rebel vs Nikon, D50 or D70.
I'm a lighting designer, primarily looking for something to shoot for my portfolio, and when it comes down to it, I really just need shutter speed.
Most of my shots come from 20->60 feet away I imagine with that range I'm also looking for a zoom lens.
I've had the Canon recommended to me, and I'm currently using a Digital Elph so i'm familar with the interface.
The Canon is also cheaper for the body, but I can't find a real cost comparison for lenses.

any thoughts?

  • If you go Nikon, get the D70 or D70s. The D50 is crap and extremely slow, runs off SD instead of CF.

If you go canon get the the 20D.

The digital rebel and the Rebel XT are crap. They're plastic, lightweight, and screw up colors.

A friend of mine has the canon rebel and no doubt it is a nice camera especially with the array of lenses and its quality. But I take better pictures with a Fuji Finepix. So if your only concern is distance and lenses I would definitely go for the canon. If you are looking for picture quality then its a toss up.
    • I'm assuming you are speaking of the FujiFilm - FinePix S3 Pro Digital SLR Camera Body when ypu re speaking of Fuji and good quality. Any other Fuji camera sux and they do have quite a few so you really should be specific for those who are not familiar.

FinePix S2 Pro Digital. And dont be fooled my friend the camera dont make the photographer. The photographer....well you know the rest. I have some friends who would amaze you with world war II cameras. It depends on what you are trying to capture and how you want to present it. Now days the competition is so strong that there isnt a wide gap in the technology.
        • The person behind the camera is the most important thins in making a good photograph.

Jay is looking for a fast shutter speed:

          D70 --- 1/8000
          D70s -- 1/8000
          20D -- 1/8000

          D50 -- 1/4000
          Digital rebel - 1/4000

Additionally the D50 uses SD cards so the processor is slower.

Personally i shoot with the Nikon D100. I bought it before any of the above camera's came out. I am very satisfied with it. I like that it has a metal body. I like the over all design. It takes a great photo. The shutter is 1/4000 and thats always worked ok for me.

But i do know a lot of people that traded in their D100 for a D70 to getthe faster shutter speed and the orientation sensor. I've used it, it takes great pictures. My uncle has one, but his pictures aren't that great casue he doesn't know what he's doing.

That being said, if i had the money to buy a D2X. You bet your ass I would.

If I had the money to buy a Canon - EOS 1Ds Mark II. That i dont' konw. Its a sweet ass camera and the only digital with a full frame sensor on the market, but my lenses are all Nikon.

Most people buy camera's based on what feels best in their hand, and the budget they are working within. So the best advice i can give is go pick oen up and use it.

You can also rent equipment from places such as Penn Camera and Service Photo.

Personally i used my friends D100 before making the decision to buy one.
